I had a wonderful time at day one of January’s local gun show. This particular show was located on the state fair grounds – my preferred local site. The Illinois state fair grounds has many advantages over the local convention centers and hotels; two of which are highly important and worthy of special attention.

It’s located very near the route I travel between home and work.

No municipal sales tax is applied.

There were lots of familiar faces, many familiar tables, and a welcome decrease in extraneous vendors (though the ATF actually set up a table instead of just wandering around). I bring to you though, the highlights of today’s perusal.

The Biggest 1911 I’ve Ever Seen.

The IAI Javelina, a 10mm hunting pistol, will only set you back $1150. It has a 7 inch barrel. The google machine has led me to tales of great power, elegant shooting, and spotty quality control (along with a blasphemous welded-on extractor).

A Musical Instrument I Could Really Get Into.

Sorry about the lighting in this set, but the sun was shining right through the window behind it. You’ll have to take my word for it that this piano is beautifully stained and boasts elegant, decorative carvings. The real attraction, however, is on the inside.

It’s a beautiful gun cabinet in disguise. The maker converted it from an old, broken piano. His asking price was $2500. Sadly he doesn’t have a website, so I can’t link to him. He was there offering his services for either making new furniture and cabinets or converting items.

The High Capacity Assault Clip

They do exist! Even <del>better</del> worse, I was told that they could be linked together, potentially allowing for a nearly unlimited potential for capacity! Imagine being able to have that many rounds together in one single line, just waiting to be loaded into a magazine! The Horror!

I present my own version

Laphroaig 18, Springfield Armory 1911 Loaded, Rocky Patel Valedor cigar, and a case of Yugo FMJ 7.62×39 surplus ammunition.

I like my scotch on the rocks.

Here’s my ‘candle’ before I lit it up. Rocky Patel’s NRA cigar. It’s not the best smoke in Rocky’s line-up, but it’s not too shabby.

So as I posted earlier, I went out shooting the other Saturday with a really awesome lady, her husband, and her grandson.

We started out with a safety talk. I’d worked with the youngin’ before, so it was easy to coax out the 4 rules from his memory.

All guns are always loaded.

Never point the gun at anything you do not want to destroy.

Keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to fire.

Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

This worked pretty well and, for the most part, he was very conscious of the rules; only needing a gentle reminder now and again to be mindful.

I’ll confess right now that I’m not an expert by any means. I have no instructor credentials, and the only ‘official’ training I’ve had has been an NRA Basic Pistol course (other than Boy Scout camp many, many years ago). Teaching him the basics of safety and marksmanship, as best I know them, probably taught me more than it did him. Being able to watch him make similar mistakes to myself, such as pulling the trigger too hard rather than squeezing, really let me see and understand some of the mechanics of shooting.

Also, he took the the rules rather literally, and I discovered where I had inadequately explained rule 3, or rather, the reasoning behind rule 3. We took a small break to go over how keeping your finger inside the trigger guard while not actually on the trigger, which he argued didn’t break the rule, was not the best of ideas. Inattention, reflex (I didn’t want to get into sympathetic reactions with a 12 year old, no matter how smart he seemed), or being startled could cause your finger to pull back onto the trigger, even if it wasn’t exactly resting on the trigger itself.

We went over basic rifle and semi-auto pistol (we had no wheel-guns) functions. What the controls were, the basics of the different actions, and how to safely cock and de-cock the lever gun we had. The rifle part was review for him, but the pistol was brand new. He didn’t mind that Grandma’s Walther was pink, it was still cool.

Safety examples complete, and basic marksmanship down, it was time for G’ma and her husband to join in on the fun.

By the end of the day, we never did get around to shooting those clay discs out of the air like we’d originally planned. That’s okay, though. We did work our way through:

The 50 year old lever action .22

G’ma’s pink Walther P22

The AR-15 (G’pa like it so much he has since bought his own.)

The semi-auto AK-47

Beretta 92F with .22 conversion

Ruger LC9 (G’pa’s new gun, never before fired)

Springfield Armory 1911 Loaded

Saiga 12 with 20 round drum

Remington 870

Norinco copy of the Winchester 1897 trench gun (with bayonet)

M&P 15-22 with Slide-fire stock. (More on this later)

G’son didn’t shoot the shotguns, but he did try everything else, even the 1911 in .45ACP (and he wasn’t traumatized). He wasn’t a fan of the larger recoil, but he was able to manage it. In the end, his favorite was the AR-15.

I don’t know about other Wally Worlds around the country, but here in central Illinois, it is unusual for a Walmart to carry something other than shotgun hunting loads, hunting rifle calibers, and the occasional FMJ ammo for pistols. In the last year or two, especially since the great ammo rush of 2008-2009, the variety has really risen. .380 Auto FMJ became a regular sight, and astonishingly enough 7.62×39 FMJ started to appear. Usually it’s all Winchester White Box (and occasionally White box hollow-points, but only in .357) or similar fare.

But this! This is unprecedented for this local Walmart. Actual defensive ammo!

The store across town started selling firearms again in the past year or so, too. Not the AR-15s I’ve been hearing about, but it’s still nice to get a nice competitor in the game to keep Gander Mtn and Scheels on their toes. I wonder if they’d do price matching.

I went shooting last Saturday with a 67 year-old lady, her husband, and her 12 year-old grandson. I’ll post up a more in depth report when I’m finished with what I’m supposed to actually be doing today/tomorrow – but while I’m distracted:

G’ma, as she is known to any acquaintance<del> under 40*</del>, hasn’t shot a pistol in a great many years. Even then, most of her shooting experience is with shotguns. Her husband bought her “the cutest little gun” a few weeks back – a pink framed Walther P22.

After a brief overview of the controls, she took aim and fired at the clay target on the berm. She was slightly disappointed – the target didn’t shatter. Then she took a closer look.

Annie Oakley is alive and well.

*I’ve been corrected, everyone calls her G’ma.

I found a new blog to read a couple of months ago:

Adaptive Curmudgeon

It’s been several weeks of work and surfing and reading his old posts, but I’m reasonably sure I found him by way of Borepatch.

All of this, however, culminates in that happy and joyous event: the purchase of alcohol.

This post introduced me to a Rum of exquisite character. Without any knowledge of the taste or quality, the sheer fortitude of their advertising required me to procure an introductory supply.

The video is a string of three separate commercials.

Gumption and genius such as this must be encouraged!

Sadly Bundaberg isn’t distributed in these great United States. It is, however sold in jolly-old England.

Building on my scotch-buying experience, I struck gold: the Master of Malt

Two varieties were in stock at the time, the regular and the overproof. I plucked up a bottle of each, along with some interesting scotches to make the shipping worth it ($25 US originally, $30 US with the added goodies).

I must say that I am very satisfied with my purchase. I’m not much of a rum drinker, my limited palate being restricted to the normal Caribbean fare, but I found them both to be very smooth and quite drinkable. The molasses is very distinctive and more caramel is present than Caribbean rum.

I found myself more drawn to the overproof, as the flavor was a bit stronger and the higher alcohol content led the experience into an area closer to my preferred drink, whisky. Both varieties lend themselves well to cigars, and I think I could get used to drinking rum more often.

When the booze budget replenishes itself again, I think I’ll scout around for the Bundaberg Reserve pictured in the commercial.
