There were lots of familiar faces, many familiar tables, and a welcome decrease in extraneous vendors (though the ATF actually set up a table instead of just wandering around). I bring to you though, the highlights of today’s perusal.

The Biggest 1911 I’ve Ever Seen.

The IAI Javelina, a 10mm hunting pistol, will only set you back $1150. It has a 7 inch barrel. The google machine has led me to tales of great power, elegant shooting, and spotty quality control (along with a blasphemous welded-on extractor).

A Musical Instrument I Could Really Get Into.

Sorry about the lighting in this set, but the sun was shining right through the window behind it. You’ll have to take my word for it that this piano is beautifully stained and boasts elegant, decorative carvings. The real attraction, however, is on the inside.

It’s a beautiful gun cabinet in disguise. The maker converted it from an old, broken piano. His asking price was $2500. Sadly he doesn’t have a website, so I can’t link to him. He was there offering his services for either making new furniture and cabinets or converting items.

The High Capacity Assault Clip

They do exist! Even better worse, I was told that they could be linked together, potentially allowing for a nearly unlimited potential for capacity! Imagine being able to have that many rounds together in one single line, just waiting to be loaded into a magazine! The Horror!

Here’s my ‘candle’ before I lit it up. Rocky Patel’s NRA cigar. It’s not the best smoke in Rocky’s line-up, but it’s not too shabby.

A .50 BMG is on the list of guns I want to own someday – mostly because bills to ban it keep cropping in up the General Assembly. I figure if they don’t want me to have one, it’s all the more reason to get one.

We started out with a safety talk. I’d worked with the youngin’ before, so it was easy to coax out the 4 rules from his memory.

1. All guns are always loaded.
2. Never point the gun at anything you do not want to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to fire.
4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

But this! This is unprecedented for this local Walmart. Actual defensive ammo!

The store across town started selling firearms again in the past year or so, too. Not the AR-15s I’ve been hearing about, but it’s still nice to get a nice competitor in the game to keep Gander Mtn and Scheels on their toes. I wonder if they’d do price matching.

G’ma, as she is known to any acquaintance under 40*, hasn’t shot a pistol in a great many years. Even then, most of her shooting experience is with shotguns. Her husband bought her “the cutest little gun” a few weeks back – a pink framed Walther P22.

After a brief overview of the controls, she took aim and fired at the clay target on the berm. She was slightly disappointed – the target didn’t shatter. Then she took a closer look.

Annie Oakley is alive and well.

*I’ve been corrected, everyone calls her G’ma.

Some say it’s Hornady is taking the marketing too far or that zombies have become too mainstream. Me? I’ll go in for at least a box.

Adaptive Curmudgeon

It’s been several weeks of work and surfing and reading his old posts, but I’m reasonably sure I found him by way of Borepatch.

All of this, however, culminates in that happy and joyous event: the purchase of alcohol.

This post introduced me to a Rum of exquisite character. Without any knowledge of the taste or quality, the sheer fortitude of their advertising required me to procure an introductory supply.

Gumption and genius such as this must be encouraged!

Sadly Bundaberg isn’t distributed in these great United States. It is, however sold in jolly-old England.

Building on my scotch-buying experience, I struck gold: the Master of Malt

Two varieties were in stock at the time, the regular and the overproof. I plucked up a bottle of each, along with some interesting scotches to make the shipping worth it ($25 US originally, $30 US with the added goodies).

I must say that I am very satisfied with my purchase. I’m not much of a rum drinker, my limited palate being restricted to the normal Caribbean fare, but I found them both to be very smooth and quite drinkable. The molasses is very distinctive and more caramel is present than Caribbean rum.

I found myself more drawn to the overproof, as the flavor was a bit stronger and the higher alcohol content led the experience into an area closer to my preferred drink, whisky. Both varieties lend themselves well to cigars, and I think I could get used to drinking rum more often.

When the booze budget replenishes itself again, I think I’ll scout around for the Bundaberg Reserve pictured in the commercial.
